About the Mall
Eastgate Mall is a super-regional shopping centre in Bedfordview, Gauteng. It is close to both Bedford Gardens and the city center of Johannesburg.
It is still one of the biggest centers in the country and the fourth biggest shopping center in Gauteng, after Mall of Africa, Sandton City, and Menlyn Park.
The center is next to the R24 airport road, west of the Johannesburg Central Business District and east of the O. R. Tambo International Airport.
History of Eastgate Shopping Centre
It was Johannesburg's first "super-regional" retail center, and its name was Eastgate.
1974 was the year that Rapp & Maister chose to go on with the construction of Eastgate.
It was planned to be constructed on a site that was 18 hectares in size, with 5 hectares being inside the Johannesburg municipality and the remaining 13 hectares located in Bedfordview.
The building was going to feature a retail area of 90,000 square meters and the key tenants were going to be OK Bazaars, Edgars, Woolworths, Greatermans, and John Orrs. The opening was scheduled for the year 1978.
There would be an additional 180 boutique-style shops, four movie theaters, and 5,000 parking spaces.
When it first opened its doors in 1979, this retail center was the biggest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
